Coupon and Grocery Store Tips

  • Subscribe to the Sunday-only issue of the Arizona Republic.

  • The cost is approximately $2.00 per week, which is minimal compared to how much you’ll save.  On average, I save $14.00 per week with coupons alone.

  • Take advantage of double coupons.  Personally, I shop mostly at Fry’s because of their coupon policy.  They will always double manufacturer’s coupons up to .50, and occasionally they even do triple coupons.

  • Pick one grocery store you like, and remain loyal to that store.  Unless it’s an awesome deal on something like turkey, meat, etc., I usually stick with one grocery store.  Plus, many of these stores will periodically send you store coupons, which can be used in addition to manufacturer’s coupons.

  • Fry's has recently launched a program where you can pre-load coupons onto your Fry's VIP savings card, and the coupons will automatically deduct from your final bill.  I think this is a great idea - the less paper, the better.  For now, it is only Proctor and Gamble products, but they may have more offers in the next few months.  Visit Fry's website for more details.

  • Purchase a cheap organizer, and sort through coupons weekly.  I typically will do this on Sunday nights after going through the new coupons in the paper. Be sure to check expiration dates to avoid any embarrassment in the check-out line!

  • After you become familiar with the store, write your list out according to how the store is laid out.  This saves me an invaluable amount of time.  Leave dairy and frozen until the end of your trip.

  • Visit online coupon websites and print coupons at home.

  • Avoid purchasing health and beauty items at grocery stores, unless they are on sale.  It's usually cheaper to purchase these items at Target or Wal-Mart.  But, I've found that you can usually find a great deal on shaving cream and toothpaste at grocery stores - especially if they're on sale and you have a manufacturer's coupon.

  • Go to the grocery store during off-peak times - early morning or late evening during the week.  For me, it is just too irritating to deal with a crowded grocery store on a weekend.  Plus, you have more of a chance of purchasing impulse items if you're not concentrating on your list.
